This article is from BMC Public Health , volume 12 . Abstract Background: Emergency department (ED) data have the potential to provide critical intelligence on when violence is most likely to occur and the characteristics of those who suffer the greatest health impacts. We use a national experimental ED monitoring system to examine how it could target violence prevention interventions towards at risk communities and optimise acute responses to calendar, holiday and other celebration-related...

This article is from Israel Journal of Health Policy Research , volume 2 . Abstract The regulation of medical practice can historically be understood as a second-level agency relationship whereby the state delegated authority to professional bodies to police the primary agency relationship between the individual physician and the patient. Borow, Levi and Glekin show how different national systems vary in the degree to which they insist on institutionally insulating the agency function from the...

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Phospholamban (PLB) is a pentameric protein that plays an important role in regulating cardiac contractility via a reversible inhibitory association with the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ATPase (SERCA), the enzyme responsible for maintaining correct calcium homeostasis. Here we study the functional and biophysical characteristics of a PLB mutant associated with human dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), with a deletion of arginine at position 14...

The teaching happened in groups this week, therefore the summary message is given by a separate source.
If you've ever moved to a new place or started a new school, you know what it's like to feel slightly out of place. None of us like feeling that way. We want to fit in. We want to feel like we belong. But sometimes following Jesus can make us feel...

Tony Black and Steve Norman run this week's episode of STT: Rewind to talk film festivals - covering brand new movie premieres at London, Vancouver, Brooklyn and… err, Bolton - and Damien Chazelle’s First Man. Were the Moon landings real? (Of course, but that's not the point.) Speaking of space, part two heads to TV with the brand new Star Wars universe animated series Resistance and a littler closer to home with Doctor Who back on our screens. Matt Latham's got a birthday surprise in store...

The Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) is a radiometer array covering the 30-70 GHz spectral range on-board the ESA Planck satellite, launched on May 14th, 2009 to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with unprecedented precision. In this paper we describe the development and validation of a software model of the LFI pseudo-correlation receivers which enables to reproduce and predict all the main system parameters of interest as measured at each of the 44 LFI detectors. These include...

We present results of an in-depth optical study of the core collapse supernova remnant G292.0+1.8 using the Rutgers Fabry-Perot (RFP) imaging spectrometer. Our observations provide a detailed picture of the supernova remnant in the emission lines of [O III] 5007, Halpha and [N II] 6548. The [O III] Fabry-Perot scans reveal a bright crescent-shaped spur of previously known high-velocity (V_radial ~ 1500 km/s) O-rich ejecta located on the eastern side of the remnant. The spur consists of a...
